How much can a Slate truck actually carry?
The Slate’s payload is 1,550 lb, and that single number has to cover everything you add after the factory — every passenger, every accessory, all your cargo, and the tongue weight of any trailer. It is not 1,550 lb of cargo plus a full cabin. Once you subtract people and a typical accessory build, real-world cargo capacity is often several hundred pounds lower — and almost nobody does this math before they order.
This is the angle no other Slate resource is covering, and it’s the one that saves you from an overloaded truck: the number that matters is what’s left after your build, not the headline 1,550 lb.
What counts against payload
Payload is the weight the truck carries on itself — as opposed to towing, which is the weight it pulls behind. Everything in this list draws from the same 1,550 lb:

What doesn’t count: anything installed at the factory as part of the truck’s curb weight. Aftermarket bolt-ons are extra, and they all subtract.

Here’s the calculation every buyer should run. Component weights below are marked [VERIFY] because Slate hasn’t published accessory weights yet — we won’t invent them. Plug in confirmed figures when they’re available; the method is what matters.

Two adults alone spend ~340 lb — over a fifth of the budget — before a single accessory or box goes in. Add a roof platform, a bed system, and a toolbox (weights [VERIFY]) and it’s realistic to be down toward 1,000 lb of usable cargo capacity. Still a lot for a small truck; just not 1,550.

The towing trap most people miss
Payload and towing aren’t separate budgets — they overlap through tongue weight. When you hitch a trailer, roughly 10–15% of the loaded trailer’s weight presses down on the ball and counts against payload. Tow near the Slate’s honest 2,000 lb limit and that’s 200–300 lb of your 1,550 lb gone to tongue weight alone — before the driver sits down.
So the truck that can “tow 2,000 lb and carry 1,550 lb” cannot do both maxed at once. A loaded trailer plus two passengers plus tongue weight can leave very little payload for cargo. Plan the two numbers together, not separately.
Why roof weight is the worst kind
All payload weight is equal on the scale, but not on the road. Weight up high on a roof rack raises the center of gravity (handling) and sits in clean air (range), so it costs you more than the same pounds carried low in the bed. The rule of thumb: heavy and low in the bed, light and bulky on the roof. How to plan your build against payload
- Start at 1,550 lb.
- Subtract your typical occupants — be realistic about who rides with you.
- Subtract installed accessories — use confirmed weights as Slate publishes them [VERIFY].
- Subtract tongue weight if you tow — 10–15% of the loaded trailer.
- What’s left is your true cargo capacity. If it’s uncomfortably low, drop weight from the accessory list first — that’s the easiest lever.
